Dugoni Discovery Day

I led small groups of undergraduate students through a workshop in the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry’s state-of-the-art Simulation Laboratory. I briefly taught them proper techniques for preparing a class V lesion and placing composite fillings. I demonstrated the preparation and filling on #8 then assisted volunteers in completing the same filling on #9. This provided visitors hands-on experience using the simulation technology that all first-year students at the school use to practice their technical skills in preparation for treating patients.

Jamaica Dental Mission Trip

I, along with a group of Pacific Dugoni students and volunteers, operated three rural clinics near Ocho Rios Jamaica. In five days our group provided dental care to 997 patients who would have remained untreated otherwise.  Jamaican's lack access to dental care, with only one public dentist for every 100,000 residents. I provided fillings, both glass ionomar and composite; cleanings and SRP’s; and many extractions, including third molars. This was an unforgettable adventure and has forever change my outlook on philanthropic dental care, both in America and abroad.

Delta Sigma Delta Big Sib Program

Delta Sigma Delta is a dental organization that promotes excellence in the dental profession. By joining the organization, students are provided a support group, mentors, educational opportunities and social activities. I have had the privilege of mentoring Derek - offering him guidance and assistance throughout dental school. I've been lucky to teach him extraction techniques and to have him request my opinion on difficult cases he has seen throughout his first year in clinic.

Pacifc Big Sib Program

The University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry's humanistic environment is extended to incoming students through the Big Sig Program. I was paired with two students from the class of 2018 - Yun and Jennifer. It has been rewarding to offer guidance and assistance to these two while they navigate dental school - offering assistance in clinic when needed or simply answering a procedural questions.

On this page I've highlighted a few of my favorite community outreach experiences, both dental and non-dental related. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like anymore information.

Oregon Tuna Classic

A little over ten years ago, a small group of fisherman joined together to steer their passion for fishing to a cause that would help feed the hungry. This led to the creation of the Oregon Tuna Classic: a fishing tournament with the goal of feeding hungry people. Since its inception, over 1,000,000 pounds of food has been donated to the Oregon Food Bank through the donation of tuna and food purchased from the cash donations.
Previously, I've captained a team in the Oregon Tuna Classic. We fished competitively in the tournament and donated our catch to the local food bank. In addition to fishing, my team and I show up early and stay late on OTC weekends to set up weigh stations, assist with fish transportation and construct the main tent that houses 44 teams (250+ people) who are all gathered for a common goal. Combining philanthropy with a personal passion has lead to my continued support of this organization.
